A Tribute to “New” Orleans Jazz
Birth of a Band
The band started life in 1998 to play one specific date the musicians blended so well together and had so much fun the “boys” agreed it would be special if the band played together on a regular basis…and The “Uptown Gang” was born. The band personnel (subject to availability) is as follows:-
Johnny Rodgers….clarinet/sax/vocals
Brilliant very versatile musician in the Traditional style currently with Gambit Jazz Band & Yerba Buena Jazz Band.
Whispering Mike Holt….Trombone & Vocals
A Gentle giant with an infectious, driving trombone style (great mute work) and a very unusual vocal style.
Pete Greg….Banjo/guitar & vocals
Great driving Rhythm man – Brilliant soloist – plays with London Jazz & Yerba Buena Jazz Band. Playing influences “Frisco style” & top Jazz & Blues stars.
Ted Simkins….String Bass
Freelance musician – Plays an unusual upright Sculptured Bass he is sympathetic to the band & musicians around him, a wonderful musician.
Graham Collicott….Drums/traps/washboard (laundry whilst you wait!)
Brilliant driving drummer, rock steady tempos’ plays with Harry Strutters band, The Cotton Club band and Temperance Seven.
Band Policy (“New” New Orleans)
To play interesting tunes from today & yesteryear including a mix of classic jazz and a programme from various Jazz periods in a light “traditional” swinging style.
To be smart in appearance – to play well musically to entertain those listening and provide an infectious beat for dancing in the Jazz Style.
