Hi Jazzers!
Last week, Friday 21 August, was one of Vintage Jazz’s best nights, with special guests ‘Gentleman Jim McIntosh on banjo and John Lee on clarinet and tenor sax. John plays some wonderful moody ‘Ben Webster’ style solos on sax, as well as some great swinging clarinet.

It always amazes us the distance that bands travel to gigs. The Tees Valley Jazz Band come from Middlesborough, Savanah Jazz Band from Halifax and New Orleans Heat from the Midlands (their trumpeter Glyn comes from Wales although he’s only trying to escape!). Some times Phil Mason comes all the way from the Isle of Bute. Then of course there are the bands that come over from other countries on tour. However, last week we had a telephone call from Keith of The Tees Valley, needing to bow out of their gig in October, due to illnesses within the band and saying it was too much for them to travel so far. We shall miss you. But don’t worry Keith, when we win the big lottery, we will book you again, sending a big limo for you and put you all up in swanky London hotel - hmmm.
Of course it doesn’t help if you forget your instrument. One trumpet player came all the way from Suffolk, without his trumpet (we managed to find one) and the drummer in an Australian Band forgot his sticks. I (Keith) said “ring up Rolf Harris and borrow some brushes, they will probably work better on drums, than they do on canvas” (only kidding).
This week, Friday 28 August, we present the great ‘Mike Barry and his Fervent Jazz’ as a seven piece band, featuring Mike on trumpet, Graham Wiseman on Trombone, Goff Dubber on reeds and Hugh Crozier on piano.
Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday.

By the by, we are having a jazz day on the Bank Holiday Sunday (30th August) at Ye Olde Whyte Lyon in Locks Bottom (just down the road from the club) next to Princess Royal Farnborough Hospital. Featuring the Phoenix Dixieland Jazz Band playing from 3.00 pm (Bar-B-Q).

Hi Jazzers. On the 10th August 2009, Vintage Jazz returned to full strength, after holidays, with Colin Scudamore on Banjo, bringing strength to the rhythm section, and Alan Snook in top form on trumpet. They played a great session. Then the following week the 17th August, we were treated to a wonderful evening of jazz, performed by the Sussex Jazz Kings. They are a very professional band led by Dave Stradwick on trumpet. He was accompanied by Bernard Stutt on clarinet, Graham Wiseman on trombone, John Hall on drums, on D.bass/sousaphone. We had a very good crowd who were certainly appreciative.
Dave presents the band very well, and has a humorous rapport with the audience. In fact, at the end of ‘Dippermouth Blues’, and his trumpet solo, he congratulated the crowd on shouting the best - “Oh play that thing” he’d heard for years!
This week, 24th August 2009, we have the return of Vintage Jazz, so get there early, park easy and hit the dance floor!

Hi Jazz friends! What a great night, last Friday 31 July 09.  The Original Eastside Stompers were terrific!

A nice tight jazz band, that play all the jazz standards extremely well.  They gave us a nice mixture of good vocals and fun numbers. It was presented, with lovely humour (creating a happy rapport with the audience) by the band’s ’comedian’ - Roger!!

I must mention the audience.  What a super appreciative crowd.  Some love to dance, others to listen, but whatever their preferences, every number was received with great enthusiasm.

In these days of recession and falling crowds in the clubs, it’s wonderful to see The Farnborough Jazz Club increasing in support, with new people every week, thoroughly enjoying their evening and returning for more.

This week (7 August), we feature the return of our house-band, Vintage Jazz.  The band they all love to dance to.  So come along, dance or listen and enjoy the happy atmosphere of the Farnborough Jazz Club.  Cheers, Keith (& Diane)

To all those in our audience last week, The Original Eastside Stompers’ line up was:-

Trombone - ‘the luscious’ Lennie Hodgeson

Trumpet - John Shepherd

Clarinet & Vocals - ‘the romantic’ Ronnie Findon

Souza - Roger Graham

Drums - Graham Collicotte

Banjo - Brian Laurence

We will next be seeing them back at Farnborough 18th December for our Christmas party (groan - did I mention that already????  No - have a nice summer)  Diane
