Weekly Chat 8th May 2009

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Last Friday (8th), the Mahogany Hall Stompers performed great jazz, giving my extended family a wonderful evening for my son-in-law, Scott’s 40th birthday celebration. Thanks to you Mohogany’s. I do hope all of you jazz fans enjoyed yourselves too. I thoroughly enjoyed having my family. Again, we had plenty of dancing.

Don’t miss this Friday (15th May). We are expecting a fantastic night. We have the (internationally famous) fabulous Phil Mason & his All Stars, with the wonderful vocals of Christine Tyrrell. Lovely Christine will undoubtedly entertain us (particularly you male species) with such style. It will be a night of great traditional jazz and if you have not attended one of Phil’s night’s, then it is a definite must for you. Entrance fee £8.

MAHOGANY HALL STOMPERS

Friday, May 8th, 2009

When the band was formed in 2001, Brian Giles, on cornet, was appointed leader to the Mahogany Hall Stompers. This was on account of his ability to shout louder than the other musicians, plus his courage whilst standing in the middle with his back to the band.

The distinctive sound and character of the band has developed from the members’ ability to adapt their style of playing from the New Orleans of King Oliver, to the sounds of Whiteman and Ellington. I suspect that their efforts may be helped by the band’s insistence that all performances take place within spiting distance of a licensed bar.

The cornet plays a very clear lead and is sided by a remarkably talented clarinet player, TIM HUSKISON and the experienced driving trombone of LES HANSCOMB. Les survived six years with The Ken Colyer Band, but we are all fans, therefore tolerance must prevail and we try not to hold it against him.

The firm foundation of the Mahogany Hall Stompers is laid down by the listening, swinging rhythm sections, with EDDY JOHNSON on bass, CHRIS MARCHANT on drums and BOB ALBUTT on banjo and vocals. Bob, who is a great fan of Clancy Hayes music, sings well over one hundred numbers, most with verses (although not in the same evening!). We’re told he’s been swinging ever since he was old enough to defend himself.

You will be made welcome at the Farnborough Jazz Club, so come along, meet Diane and Keith, who run the club, make new friends and enjoy ‘fun music played from the heart’.

Mike Barry’s Uptown Gang last Friday (24th April) was/is such a professional band.  They played so powerfully and with so many different numbers, what a great night I had, and so many of you said the same.  I can’t wait till the next gig.  Actually , Mike Barry’s next date is 28th August with his Fervant Jazz Band, with Yerba Buena Celebration Jazz Band on 4th December 2009.

This Friday (1st May) is Vinatge Jazz, who have a special following.  Hope you all come because the more people who turn up the more fun will be had by all.  The fabulous Colin Scudamore (son of maj) is playing Banjo this week.  Entrance fee £7.
